New Blog Address - New Format

I love blogspot! I think they provide a great service. Everything is so user friendly, and easy on their site. However, I am not in love with the design of my blogspot blog. I have gone through all the templates. I have even messed with the code to make the blog look more the way I want it to look. Unfortunately, my blog on blogspot will never look the way I want it to look. So I checked out all the templates on wordpress, and I actually found one I kind of like.

So if you are a follower of this blog, or just happen to come across it, I advise you to check out my new blog at http://heidivail.wordpress.com/

Some day I will pay the big bucks, and have my blog custom designed by a professional, and it will be the blog of my dreams! But for now I think my new blog design/address will work just fine for me!

Heidi Vail | Bookbinding Update

So after a very long break from bookmaking I am finally back in action. I recently created a bunch of new books, which makes me very happy. I am in the process of completing more, and have a few commission pieces to work on as well. I don't think I will ever be bored for a very long time! Here is a picture of two of my favorite recent books...

After all this bookmaking, I realized that I had not finished my "book" section on my website, and that I should probably do something about that. So this past week, my free moments were devoted to getting some web pages done. I still plan on adding additional pages dedicated to providing information on the wedding album brands I provide, but at least now when y'all go visit the books section of my site there will no longer be just a "More Coming Soon!" Instead, I have replaced it with a more informative page, with even a link to my etsy shop! Click here to check it out! And, of course I would love to hear what you think!

My Wedding Vendors Part V - Joseph Prezioso Photography

I hope you have all been enjoying the last few posts I have written about some of the fantastic wedding vendors I used for my wedding. This is the final post, and is dedicated to my amazingly talented wedding photographer.

As a photographer, pictures are obviously ridiculously important to me. And wedding pictures even more so. I wanted someone that would capture the entire day from the big moments, to the tiny details, and everything in between. I wanted to work with someone who would be fun, have lots of energy, and be a photo wiz! And I knew just who I was going to call for the job...Joseph Prezioso!Now for those of you who don't know, Joseph is one of the reasons I am in the wedding photography business. He hired me the summer after my graduation from SCAD, as an assistant/second shooter. We have photographed over 100 weddings together, and he has been a pleasure to work with, as well as a great friend. I have learned so much about photography, weddings, and professionalism from him. And, I was so happy when he told me he would be honored to photograph my big day.As expected, Joseph captured our day like no one else can! Tim and I love looking at our wedding pictures. We love seeing our friends and family, all the smiles, the happy tears, and great moments. Each photo tells the story of our day, and they will be cherished forever. We can't thank Joseph enough, for doing such an amazing job, and being a fantastic photographer. Thank you Joseph! Thank you!

My Wedding Vendors Part IV - Courtney's Floral Creations

When I first told my dear friend Lori about my engagement she was super thrilled for Tim and I. She is one of the greatest friends a girl could have. She is super supportive, helpful, and fun. It was so terrific to discuss my ideas, and thoughts for the wedding with her. She of course had lots of great suggestions, and really good listening ears! But what really blew me away about Lori, was that she told me she wanted me to have the bridal bouquet of my dreams, and that she was going to make it happen.

I had a really good idea of what I wanted, but I wasn't sure who should be my florist. Lori immediately suggested Courtney's Floral Creations located in downtown Falmouth. Lori and I have very similar taste, so I knew this would be a good place to start. And once I met with Courtney, I knew I could stop searching.

Courtney is amazingly talented, and has fantastic taste. Her floral arrangements are just breathtaking. When meeting her I was amazed by how inviting her shop was. She was so engaging, and relaxing to be around. I felt like we could talk about flowers, weddings, and basically anything all day long! When discussing my bouquet she really took the time to figure out exactly what I was hoping for. We talked about how realistic it would be to acquire some of the out of season flowers that I loved. She also demonstrated how with different flowers she could still produce a bouquet that shared the same style, traits, and essence I was looking for. Basically, when I left her shop I knew I was in good hands. When my flowers arrived on my wedding day I was so happy. My bouquet, along with my bridesmaids flowers looked so charming, and elegant. I wanted very garden inspired, soft, creamy bouquets, and that is what Courtney created! The girls loved their flowers, and I wish that I could have kept my bouquet forever. Yet, it was even sweeter presenting my bridal bouquet to my Grandmother after she, and my Grandfather were the last remaining couple on the dance floor for the "Longest Married Couples Dance". My Grandma was so touched, and simply loved the bouquet! Below, is one of my favorite pictures of my Grandma and I, taken earlier in the day with my pretty bouquet. Thank you Courtney for being such a pleasure to work with, and creating the perfect bouquets for my wedding. I was super impressed with your work, and will always recommend your shop!

My Wedding Vendors Part III - DJ Curtis Knight

During the beginning phases of planning our wedding my husband Tim and I were not always on the same page. Part of the problem was that I had been to so many weddings, while he had only been to one. I thought I had all the answers, and I took his lack of knowledge on the subject, as disregard, and contempt for all things wedding. When he questioned my ideas, I took it as an insult rather than realizing he was only trying to learn more. As you can imagine we didn't always agree. One thing we immediately agreed upon however was hiring DJ Curtis Knight.

I had met Curtis, and his partner Anna while photographing a wedding, about a year before my own, and was instantly blown away. They were both so friendly, fun, and upbeat I just had to inquire about their DJ services. I soon contacted them, to set up an appointment so Tim could meet them too. Our initial consultation with Curtis, and Anna was outstanding. Tim, and I felt so comfortable with them. Both were a wealth of musical knowledge, and had tons of great ideas for making our celebration the best it could be. We left their office singing, and grooving in the car. We couldn't wait for the big day!

As the final days approached to our wedding, Curtis was in constant contact with us. He is one speedy email responder. From music lists, to schedules, I sent a lot of information his way. Our wedding venue did not have a wedding coordinator, and I wanted to make sure that everything would run smoothly. When I started getting nervous about all the plans, Tim reminded me that Curtis, and Anna would be there, and that everything would be taken care of. Tim couldn't have been more correct.

On the day of our wedding Curtis, and Anna were exceptional. They were there every step of the way making sure everything ran flawlessly, not just the music. The two of them sure know how to make everything flow. The mood was always uplifting, fun, and relaxed. I never felt rushed, or that things were getting dull. They were never pushy, or too involved in the days activities. Everyone had a great time, and I have Curtis and Anna to thank for making our celebration great!

Tim and I share so many amazing memories from our day, and one that always makes us laugh is a Curtis Knight moment. After dinner, Tim and I had slipped away with our photographer to capture some wedding day portraits as the sun set. We were a distance away, when we realized that I didn't have my veil, and that we needed it. All of a sudden, from no where Curtis comes running down the dirt road, with his own camera in hand, and my veil in tow! It was so hysterical, and fabulous! Tim says that from that moment Curtis became our wedding day MVP.

And it always makes me laugh, because everyone in the photograph including my Mum was copying my brother's best friend dance moves!Tim spinning me during our last dance! So much fun!Tim and I running through our "tunnel of love" right before we escaped on our honeymoon! Later when our friends talked to Curtis about how great it was(after we left), he confessed that he hadn't done one in many years, but it just felt right, so he just decided to go with it. This is just another example proving Curtis's genius!

My Wedding Vendors Part II - Deb Goldman Wedding Officiant

Choosing the person who is going to marry you is a very big deal. Tim and I had originally chose to marry in the church that I had attended in my youth. However, as we approached our wedding date, we realized it wasn't the best plan for us. With three months to go we decided to look for the right individual for the both of us.
We found Deb Goldman, a Certified Lifecycle Celebrant and Multifaith Officiant, based out of Boston, and we are so happy we did. From the moment we met her, we felt a sense of calm. It felt so right to select her to marry us. Deb is warm, thoughtful, resourceful, understanding, and diplomatic. She helped create a wedding ceremony that was touching, romantic, fun, and festive. She fused together traditional, and more contemporary customs, to make our wedding unique, and special. It was just an amazing ceremony!

My Wedding Vendors - Part I

This past September marked a very special time in my life. My husband Tim and I were married in my hometown of Falmouth, over the most glorious of Labor Day weekends that I can ever remember. Our wedding was everything we had hoped for. Not only was it fun, and laid back, but it also was intimate, elegant, and timeless. We will cherish our memories of that day forever, and always be thankful to the amazing people who helped make it so special.

Even when planning the simplest weddings there is a lot of work involved. For many it feels like a second job. There were certainly times when I felt very frustrated, and overwhelmed. Luckily, we had each other, friends and family, and some fantastic vendors to help us out. A few of these vendors did more than provide us with wedding services, they really listened, sympathized, advised, and encouraged. They had Iron Chef America champion Ming Tsai come in and work with the staff to prepare an amazing three course dinner for fifty of the club's members. Happy New Year!

Just wanted to wish you all a very happy and healthy 2010, and to take a moment to look back at an amazing year. 2009 was most excellent! Tim and I got married, which was just marvelous. My grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. My brother Tom graduated from college, and commissioned as marine. He also competed in a lot of races this past year. My favorite was the death race which he won. Both my brother Tony, and my bro-in-law Johnny graduated from high school, and left home for their first year of college. My mother-in-law graduated and became a nurse practitioner. My Dad now has a new hip. And my sister Alex just got into her #1 pick for grad school! I am so thankful for 2009. It was truly a blessing.
Lastly, thank you all for your continued support. Heidi Vail | Photography is taking off, and Tim and I are so excited! There are going to be some amazing weddings this year. We can't wait to be apart of them, and help capture some spectacular moments. Good luck to all those in the planning process, and best wishes to all!

Bachelorette Party Photo Shoot

Due to my subdued nature I was not very keen on having a crazy bachelorette party two nights before my wedding this past September. Thus I was ecstatic when my party planning bridesmaid, and dear friend Ruth came up with a Vargas style photo shoot party. Amazing hors d'oeuvres, and champagne jump started our evening, and we soon were doing each others hair, putting on fabulous hats, and taking fun era-influenced photos. While editing the photos from my party it got me thinking that maybe tons of other girls may want to give this a try. All you need is a big sheet for a backdrop, some fun outfits, and a camera. But you don't have to stop there. You could scout for locations, bring props, rent costumes, and even hire a photographer such as myself. Just think, the possibilities are endless!

Fantastic Wedding at the State Room - Boston

A few weeks ago I was in Boston photographing a fantastic wedding with Joseph Prezioso. We started off the day at the Langham Hotel, which is just a beautiful location. The bridal party was there getting ready, and relaxing before the big day ahead of them. Once everyone was finished, it was time for some photos. I was photographing the Groom while he waited in Post Office Square for his lovely bride to arrive, and as soon as he saw her, he ran over to greet her. The two of them were so adorable together, lots of fun, and great to photograph. After our awesome photo session, it was time for the wedding to begin at the State Room. Both their ceremony and reception was held in the Great Room, which has some unbelievable views of Boston. This wedding rocked! The flower arrangements were out of this world. The food was fantastic. They had three different stations set up for guests to choose from. And the band had everyone on their feet all night long. They even had a photo booth...so cool! Here are a few of my favorite shots from that day.

Anna & Aaron's Amazing Savannah Wedding

About three weeks ago I was on a plane to Savannah, Georgia. My husband Tim was traveling with me, and we were beyond excited to be returning to where we had both studied art, met,and fallen in love. And why were we going to this amazing city?!!! To photograph my first official wedding as head photographer, and Tim was to be my second shooter! Not only that but it was my dear friend Anna's wedding. She would be marrying her fantastic fiance Aaron. They are fellow SCAD graduates, and extremely talented artists. I knew that their wedding would be beautiful, creative, and fun. And even with these high expectations, I was still blown away by their style & grace, family & friends, their love for each other, and millions of magical moments!
I had so much fun photographing, directing, planning, and editing images from this wedding! And I loved working with Tim. He did such a great job, and we worked really well together! This wedding was such a great experience, I feel so fortunate, and I am just so excited that I may overload this post with pictures. So without further ado...I give you photos! Enjoy!

Just got back from Savannah where I photographed Anna and Aaron's wedding. It was such a beautiful, wonderful celebration of love! I couldn't be more happy for them both! I had so much fun photographing them, and they of course were great to work with! I have way more to edit, but I wanted to share a couple shots.

Two Weddings with New Camera

Last weekend I shot two weddings with Joseph Prezioso. I was really excited because it would be the first time using my new Canon 5D markii!!! So far I am really enjoying this camera. I had been previously shooting with the Canon 30D, and let me tell you there is a massive difference. The camera is faster, more accurate, and produces much higher quality images. I shot the following shots all as JPGs. I think I am in love!!!

Boxing at the Fairmont Copley

A couple nights ago, I was at the Fairmont Copley Plaza photographing for the University Club of Boston. A couple of their members, along with the membership director, had organized an exciting night of dinner, and live boxing. And what an exciting night it was! The club had sold all their 250 tickets, which made for a packed house. There were hors d'oeuvres, drinks, a grand buffet dinner, and even a live singer, not to mention the boxers who were competing in their final fights before finals. It was my first time photographing, let alone watching a live boxing event, so it was definitely exciting for me. Everyone had a great time, and it certainly was a hit. Cathy | Senior Portrait

A few weeks ago, I photographed Cathy for her senior portrait. I really enjoyed photographing her at both the locations she chose because each spot held fond memories for her. For example Cathy and her brother had been photographed in front of this giant tree as children, and she lit up when she was posed in front of it. I also loved that she brought two outfits. Her beach outfit was perfect, and the colors really worked well with her surroundings. She was awesome to work with, and I certainly had fun! Here are a few of my favorite shots...

Bristol, Rhode Island | Wedding

A week ago I helped photograph an awesome wedding with Joseph Prezioso. Almost all of the bridesmaids had recently been married and photographed by Joseph for their own wedding. Suprisingly, this was the first time I was meeting all of them. However, right away I recognized that they were a fun crowd, and that the day was going to go great.
After the beautiful ceremony, we traveled to Colt State Park where we searched for a location for some group shots.There literally were hundreds of people all about playing lawn sports, having picnics and socializing. It seemed like every inch of the park was taken, and I was afraid we would never find a good spot. Eventually, we came to a path where there weren't quite so many people, and we were able to take some great photographs.
After that we headed to the historic Linden Place in Bristol, Rhode Island for the reception. The property was beautiful, the weather was perfect, and the music had everyone on their feet so it was a really fun wedding! Here are some of my favorite shots...

Baby Henry

This was my first official baby portrait so I was a little nervous, but as soon as I met Henry I was mesmerized, and felt very calm. Alison and Dan | Couples Portrait

Last week I photographed Alison and Dan for their couples portrait. It was an awesome evening, and tons of fun. We walked all over downtown Boston, and eventually made our way to the Boston Public Garden. My subjects were great conversationalists, and had each other laughing often. They also both relaxed instantly in front of the camera, and gave each other plenty of attention which always makes for better photos. I loved the colors, and lighting that evening. Here are a few of my favorites! Thank you Alison and Dan! You were terrific!

Norwich Graduation

A few weeks ago I spent the weekend in Vermont for my brother Tom's graduation and commission ceremonies at Norwich University. It was a blast hanging out with my family, and watching Tom partake in all the traditions.
It feels like just yesterday when Tom told me his plans for college. I was a junior in art school, and was initially stunned that he chose a military school, let alone wanted to become a marine. But after watching him develop, and seeing the man that he has become, I can't imagine him taking any other path. I am so impressed with him, and know he will make America proud.
I of course brought my camera, and tried my best to capture the weekend. I always love photographing my family. They expect me to have my camera in hand, and usually just ignore it, and act like themselves. I did have a quick photo session with my sister Alex, as we explored the property around the house we were staying at. We had way too much fun taking pictures! I am also happy to report I managed to get in a few pictures myself! Below are a few of my favorite shots...

Brianne and Javin - Couples Portrait

I had so much fun this past Wednesday. The weather was flawless, and I spent the early evening photographing Brianne and Javin in South Boston. For their portraits we went to Castle Island, which I had never been to. I definitely would like to go back...it was great! I loved working with the couple because they were so comfortable in front of the camera, and were not afraid to show their affection towards one another. Brianne's fun flirtyness harmonized perfectly with Javin's cool relaxed demeanor creating an awesome mood, and wonderful images. Here are a few of my favorites! Enjoy!

Eva's "College" Senior Portrait

A French Twist | Wedding

This past weekend I photographed an amazing wedding at the Sheraton Commander in Cambridge. The couple chose this location due to its close proximity to where they first met. The Bride, who had majored in French in undergrad, had told a friend she wished she had someone to practice with her, while studying at Harvard Law. Her friend of course found the perfect practice partner, the Groom, who was from France and who was also studying law. She introduced them, they fell madly in love, and the rest is history. I enjoyed the wedding because it was so much fun, full of tradition, and definitely had an international vibe to it! Here are a few of my favorite shots of the day.

The ring bearer, and his sister the flower girl. These kids were sweet, and really well behaved. At one point in the evening the little boy gave me the Bride's flowers. I of course thanked him, and then returned them to the rightful owner. The beautiful ceremony. Their first dance as husband and wife! It is always so great when you see that the parents are still very much in love. The Bride and Groom watch as their matchmaker makes the first cut!

Senior Portraits

Latest Bookbinding Project Complete!

I recently completed my latest bookbinding project. My Aunt and Uncle commissioned me to create a hand bound album using their images from their travels to China and Tibet. I went through hundreds of their photos to find the best ones that told their story. Once editing was done I printed 60 pages front and back on aurora double-sided natural ink jet paper. Which was then followed by spraying all the pages multiple times with fixative to decrease smudging. This was my first time doing this, and I will have to do this every time I create a book from now on. The next step was to cut, and fold all the paper so that they were all even and ready to be joined with the cover. I carved out an indent of the Chinese character journey into davy board to create an embellishment. The board was then covered by paper from Nepal. Once the cover was all set I used the long stitch to hold all the pages in place. This step was a little difficult. Due to the spine being so thick I had to walk from one side of my apartment and back every time I made a stitch so the thread wouldn't tangle. I think I need to devise another plan to tackle this stitch next time. Anyways the dimensions of the book are 6'' high, 12'' long and 2'' thick. This book was not the easiest one to create, but I enjoyed the whole process, and I am really happy with my results. This past week I helped photograph an amazing wedding. The couple was joined by friends and family from all over the world. The wedding was held at Boston's World Trade Center right on the waterfront. The decorations were absolutely stunning, the people were full of spirit, and the celebration was full of tradition. It was truly a joy to take part! Here are a few of my favorites...

Last Friday night I photographed another fantastic wedding. The couple were married at St. Mary's Church in Melrose, and then had their reception at the Tewksbury Country Club. The whole day was filled with tons of emotion, love, and laughter. The bride was so much fun to watch. She was so completely excited about getting married to her groom. Even when the priest was giving them their blessing she kept sneaking peaks at her new husband. When couples are in love like this pair, it makes my job so much more enjoyable.

North Shore | Wedding

Last weekend I photographed, and filmed a beautiful wedding. We started the day at the bride's parent's home in Revere. The past few weddings I have been to have had huge bridal parties, however this wedding was a little different. The bride surrounded herself with her sister, and parents while preparing for the ceremony. It was a very peaceful, and relaxing documenting them. The ceremony was held at St. Raphael’s in Medford. This church is beautiful with amazing stain glass windows that shower the pews with tints of purples and blues. Following the ceremony we took the bride and groom for a walk for their portrait session, and then headed to Topsfield at the Commons. The hall was beautiful, and the food was terrific. It was great working there, and the night went well.

State Room | Wedding

My second wedding last weekend was really cool because guests had traveled from all over the country, as well as Jamaica to see the joining of the happy couple. This special event took place at the State Room in Boston, which is an extravagant location in the financial district, with amazing views of the city. The bride and her attendants arrived early with lots of smiles and laughs ready to finish preparing for the bride for her big day. The ceremony was short and sweet, and infused a few of her Jewish traditions, with his Christian faith. We then went outside to Faneuil Hall to take pictures of the family, and bridal party while the rest of the guests enjoyed cocktail hour. Later we joined everyone in the beautifully decorated reception for lots of dancing, and a scrumptious brunch. My boss and I ended the day with just the couple taking even more pictures by the waterfront. Here are a few of my favorite shots!

Gloucester | Wedding

This past weekend I photographed two weddings. The first wedding took place in Gloucester at the Ocean View Inn and Resort. I had worked at this location last summer, and naturally I was excited to return. The Ocean View has an awesome staff, good food, and great views of the ocean, and twin lighthouses. I was not disappointed. This wedding was a blast, with a great dance crowd, and lots of laughs. The couple was super fun and was wonderful to work with!

This past weekend I was a little worried about photographing Saturday's wedding since it was just a miserable looking day with lots of rain, and wind. But upon arriving at the brides family home, I realized that despite the weather this wedding was going to be loads of fun, and I would have the chance to take great photos. This is because I have never seen someone so excited about getting married as this bride. She was beaming, and was not fazed by the rain in the least. Actually she had hoped it would rain, since it had rained on her parents wedding, as well as the groom's parents wedding. The bride with the help of her family and bridesmaids did a great job planning her wedding,from the dresses, to the ceremony, and the centerpieces to the entertainment, every thing was just awesome. And I am so glad the couple had a blast. They looked truly happy and content with their special day!

Two years ago, I helped my boss photograph a fantastic wedding held in Kennebunkport. This past weekend we returned to document her sister's wedding. It was so nice to see their family again. The couple was married at St. David's Church, and then had their reception at Pier 77. I was so excited to return to this restaurant. Not only is it absolutely gorgeous, and by the water, but the food and service is amazing. The food was even better than last time, which I didn't think was possible. Everyone had a great time, and the bride and groom were so cute together. It was so great to be a part of their day!

York Beach, Maine | Wedding

This past weekend Joseph and I photographed two great weddings. Friday's wedding took place in York Beach, Maine. The couple both got ready at the same hotel so we were able to photograph the bride and groom getting ready, which is something we don't always get to do. Next the ceremony and reception were held at the Union Meeting House, with a short break for pictures on the beach, which was lots of fun. We ended the night photographing the couple with all their friends lighting sparklers. It was definitely a memorable event, due to the fact that it was obvious the couple adored each other, and that their friends families were so excited for them.

Art 4: Grown

This past weekend I attended the opening of Art 4: Grown. The show is displaying my work as well as other alumni from Falmouth High School who participated in Anne Downs, Art 4 class, and who are still currently creating art. It was so great to see everyone and how their work has progressed. I have to say I am super impressed, and if anyone has a chance to take a look at the show before it closes on Monday September 8th they should do so! Back from Japan

I recently took a trip to Japan to visit one of my college roommates, and good friend Valerie Mendez. She is currently living in Japan, while teaching English. During my stay, we traveled to many places starting with Valerie’s small town of Goi in the Chiba prefecture, just southeast of Tokyo.While in Goi we took in many sites of the surrounding area always traveling by train. Everytime we walked to the station the local children would run up to us to greet their foreign teacher. It was so adorable. The first night we took in a baseball game in the city of Chiba. Go Marines! The next day we hiked in Nokogiri-Yama, and visited the largest stone figure of Buddha in Japan. The following day we went to Onjuku Beach. I have never seen a more crowded beach. Unfortunately, the wind was blasting sand everywhere so it was too risky to use my camera. After the beach we viewed fireworks at Kisarazu’s summer festival while trying not to be trampled by the masses of people.
The next part of our trip took us away from Goi starting with Tokyo. There we ate Korean barbeque, amazing pineapple, and the freshest sushi. We took in the blossoming lotuses, Tokyo Tower, and the many temples and shrines adoring the city. We even spent the night in a capsule hotel.From Tokyo we took a bus to the base of the tallest mountain in Japan, Mt. Fuji. In the late afternoon we ascended into the mist. By nightfall we were still climbing and above the clouds, lighted only by moonlight and shooting stars. Late in the evening we took refuge from the intense wind gusts, and a spitting rain for a short time in a hut. At 2am when we woke, we joined the traffic jam of people all hastening up the mountain as the dawn approached. Luckily we made it to the top in time to grab great seats to watch the sun rise over a vast blanket of clouds.
After our long hike we enjoyed a restful stay at this year’s best Asian hostel, K’s House – Mt. Fuji. We made friends with Canadians, ate lavender ice cream, and took in the clearing views of the mighty mountain we had climbed.Our next stop was Hakone, a large lake region, known for its healing springs, rich minerals, and fine Onsens(Japanese Bathhouses). Here we took in more sights, relaxed at one of the Onsens, and insured we would live an extra seven years by eating the black eggs of Hakone.
My last night in Japan was spent traveling back to Goi. And on the way we had to stop in Tokyo at rush hour to witness the Shibuya Crosswalk, the busiest in the world. Along with experiencing it first hand, we also viewed it from the top floor of a Starbucks where we made bets as to who below would make it first across the insanely busy street.
As we left the flickering lights of Shibuya behind I felt content, and satisfied with my travels. I will truly cherish the memories and photographs of this trip forever.

We then traveled to Southbridge for the ceremony, with a reception following at the Salem Cross Inn a few towns away. Both locations complimented the couples shared love for American history. The bride and groom were such a pleasure to work with, and their family and friends were loads of fun.

Northfield VT | Wedding

This past weekend I photographed an amazing wedding. The whole event took place on the Bride's Grandfather's farm in Northfield, Vermont. The bride and her maids got ready in the main house, while the groom, and his ushers hung out in the guest cabin. Everyone was a little worried about the clouds in the distance, but there was no rain for their lovely ceremony. The view was amazing, and everyone watched the couple while sitting on bales of hay, with tractors scattered through out the field. After the ceremony the party was moved to the tent, where there was awesome food, and lots of dancing. The night ended with lots of rain, and mud, but I don't think anyone seemed to mind!

Earlier this week I photographed my brother Tony for his senior portrait. We first went to Black Beach, our favorite beach on the Cape. My dad took my senior photo their, and I took my brother Tom's senior photo there too, so it only made sense that I should take Tony there for his portrait session. It was an amazing day,and the weather was fantastic, so Tony brought his skim board as well. We finished his session at our house, and he had my Mum laughing like crazy, especially when he stuck his face in the Hydrangeas. The whole day was awesome, and I like a lot of his photos. Boston Harbor Hotel | Wedding

I had the privilege to photograph a wedding at the Boston Harbor Hotel last weekend. The hotel is truly a beautifully lavish setting. As the bride and her maids prepared for the ceremony they enjoyed excellent room service, and amazing views from the Bridal Suite. All the girls looked awesome in their pink and champagne gowns. Their makeup and hair was done by Charlotte Phinney, who did a spectacular job. The bride looked breath-taking in her halter top gown which was adorned with small sparkling beads accenting the top. The ceremony was memorable, and moving. After the couple shared their first kiss as husband and wife, they walked down the aisle, their eyes never leaving each other's gaze. It was a very touching event.

The Brookside Club | Wedding

I am always excited when a wedding is on the Cape. #1, because I love the Cape, and #2 because if I don't have a wedding the next day it means I get to sleep over my parents house instead of driving home late at night! So I was excited for this wedding. Plus, it took place on 06.07.08 which I think is way cool! I love wedding dates that have cool number sequences. The wedding took place at The Brookside Club themselves at beautifully decorated tables. Each centerpiece was a giant martini glass filled with roses. Everything was bright and cheerful including the guests. They were defiantly a party in Bourne. I know of a few people planning on getting married there so I really wanted to check it out. It has awesome views, and if the weather is nice cool sunsets! The short but sweet ceremony took place on top of the hill overlooking the golf course. The aisle was strewn with varying hues of rose petals, which looked terrific. And the bride just glowed the moment she saw her husband-to-be. Once inside for the reception, guests found beautiful bright decorations. Each table had a giant martini glass centerpiece filled with roses. And all the guests received martini glasses as their favors so you can guess it was a party group.

On a side note I must say that I really loved the flowers at this wedding. The flowers were actually done by the bride's sister. She owns Just For You Florist, which is located in Pocasset. I have seen her bringing flowers to other weddings in the past and I always like her work. I might have to hire her for my own wedding!

Two Wonderful Weddings in One Weekend

Last weekend, I had the honor of photographing at two wonderful weddings. It was a real treat to witness these two events because both reflected the style, and grace of the couples. The first wedding was held at the Hellenic Center in Ipswich. The other was at the Commander's Mansion in Watertown. Both locations had beautiful grounds, and wonderful spaces for receptions. Both weddings took place outside: one in front of a giant Dogwood Tree that was adorned with tons of yellowy white flowers, and the other surrounded by a green-leafed arbor. The words that were said about the two couples, love, faith, and marriage were lovely, and deep. The flowers, decorations, and bands were awesome. Even the food was excellent at both events. But best of all the couples were really fun, and totally in love with each other and that always makes for great photos. Here are a few...

I also have to give a shout out to a few vendors. First off both reception sites were awesome, and the women in charge of the events were great. They effortlessly kept everything moving, and running smoothly. They were always there if anyone needed them, but they kept out of the spotlight, which is really important. I also need to say that Jaime Berkman, and Sarah Maher the make-up/hair stylists at the second wedding were amazing. Their company's name is Eye 4 Beauty, and I was really impressed with them. They were fun, friendly, and skilled! They made the Bride look radiant! The band at the second wedding was also great. Klezamir is a group of fun loving spirited musicians, specializing in traditional klezmer. They are really talented, and I enjoyed working with them a lot!

Country Wedding

I recently photographed a wonderful wedding. I felt like the couple did a great job of planning their day. It was really intimate, and you could tell that everyone invited was so happy and thrilled for them. It was held at the Harrington Farm in Princeton MA. The farm provided a beautiful peaceful setting which was the perfect for the happy couple who were laid back and obvious nature lovers. The staff at the farm was fantastic, and their food was spectacular. And although the guests didn't seem like the dancing type, with a bit of magic Greg Bedard the DJ was able to get them on their feet and out on the dance floor. I also have to say that I was particularly impressed with his DJ equipment. The sound quality was amazing, and even better his speakers barely took up any room. The reception was a blast, and I couldn't wait to share with my fiance how nice the day had been. Unfortunately, my brand new cell phone flung itself out of my also brand new jacket pocket into the toilet. So I had to wait until I arrived home. Oh well! Anyways, here are a few of my favorite shots!

Hyatt Hotel | Wedding

This wedding started in Middleton at the Bride's parents new home, which was beautiful. We then traveled to their church located off of Rt 1 for the ceremony. The priest there, was very strict and had a lot of rules about when and where we could shoot. For example we were only permitted to to take 2 shots of the Bride walking down the aisle with her father. I completely understand when priests ask for no photos during the actual ceremony because it can be distracting but I don't understand why we couldn't fully capture that special moment of the bride and her father. Fortunately the ceremony is only a small part of the whole wedding day, and we were quickly off to the reception at the Hyatt at Logan. The view was spectacular and the party was lively. Here are a few of my favorite shots of that day.

First Wedding of the 2008 Season!

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of shooting an awesome wedding. It started in Danvers at the Bride's mother's house. There I ran into a familiar face, makeup artist Ann Marie Laurendeau, who did a fabulous job. From there we traveled a short distance to The Holy Trinity United Methodist Church. After the ceremony we took pictures on Maple St, which was a few blocks away. This part was a lot of fun because the Bride and Groom were so comfortable with each other and in front of the camera. Joseph suggested they order some lo mein and feed each other standing outside the Hong Kong Cafe. The couple thought this was a great idea especially since the Groom loves lo mein. After all that we drove to The Georgetown Club. The staff was so friendly, and the food was terrific. The reception went quite well. It was truly a wonderful celebration, and the couple was so happy. I wish every wedding could run so smoothly, and be so lovely.

The Knot Party

Just in case ya'll didn't know my boss, Joseph Prezioso made The Knot: Best of Weddings 2008, and thus we were invited to their vendors party. It was held at the Back Bay Event Center, and we had greatly anticipated going to this event. When we arrived we filled into this long hallway where drinks and hors d'oeuvres were passed. While waiting for the main event we tried to make small talk with other photographers, and took our photo in the free photo booth. (If only the photo booths in Ocean City were free. Timmy and I would be there all day!)
Next we were ushered into a room where we listened to a speech on how The Knot is doing, and how they are merging with the Wedding Channel. From a marketing standpoint it was interesting but beyond that I expected more on the presentation side. We learned that The Knot reaches 80% of all brides in the U.S., and that brides differ depending on geography. For example the average bride in Boston gets married a little later in life, and has a faster engagement period then the brides in rest of the country. After that we were welcomed into a function room with amazing looking couches...that filled up fast. There was free drinks and more food. We were about to go, when I spotted the woman in charge of weddings at The Taj, who we had met at a wedding last summer. Her and Joseph exchanged words, and cards and then we went out merry way, but of course not without receiving our goodie bags which were filled with some pretty cool treats, and a magazine...Yes! that means I can continue my bridal magazine hording for free!

Boston Marathon

I was off Monday so I was able to watch the Boston Marathon. The weather was fantastic, and I was in a great spot to photograph my bro Tom. He placed 613th with a 2 hour and 53 min time. Way to go Bro! His friend Zack also ran. Here is a shot of them together after the race.

Photo Book Contest

I was flipping through the newest edition of American Photo, and came across a call for entries add. The contest is Photography.Book.Now, and is a juried competition, which will be traveling to great locations such as New York, San Francisco, and distant countries. I got really excited and wanted to create one of my hand bound books using my images. But alas you have to publish the book using blurb.com, or another self publishing firm like Lulu. And you have to send 3 hard copies in for submission...well I can't do that if it is an original piece, now can I? Darn...so maybe I will just go on to blurb.com and make a book anyways.

I just realized that I have no pictures on the web of my handmade books...I think this should do! Just looking at these pictures makes me want to create even more!

Mystic 3

Last Monday I woke up way too early for me and drove to Mystic CT, for a wedding photography conference called Mystic 3. It was awesome. I learned so much and met some cool people. Joseph Prezioso, along with a number of other photographers gave presentations. Here is a list of the presenters and links to their sites.

Steven Frischling, traveling extradordinare, talked about luggage and airports. He said the 5 worse airports were Paris, Rome, Newark, Philadelphia, and Nigeria. Nigeria being the most terrifying because people get shot just exiting the planes.

Joseph Prezioso, my boss, shared his recent project Let them Eat Cake. I found out through his presentation that he has plans for more shoots, which means I will be going to more shoots!

Next spoke Michelle Turner who explained how to shoot a wedding in any lighting and location. Her shots are awesome! She really has a knack for being able to shoot anywhere. Her strategy is to shoot at all sorts of angles, and focus on color.

Neil Van Niekerk then spoke on how to use your flash to "sweeten the scene". He was an expert, and this was a very technical lecture, but he lightened the mood every once in a while with a quick joke.

After lunch David M, and Monika Broz gave an excellent presentation on branding. They were witty, and so much fun. They incorporated great pictures and drawings to emphasize their point. I learned a lot from them. They said to find your niche. They asked us to think about who we are, and what we do. Most importantly we had to think about what makes us different from everyone else. Once you figure these things out you can make a brand for yourself. Branding they explained should be targeted, meaningful, authentic, consistent, and actionable and have emotional impact. Basically they were trying to help each photographer make their own wave and ride it. To learn more about them go to projectmadlove.com.

Michael Cody an avid story teller, told us a tale. It started off with a young man graduating from art school, but wanting to make money. So this young man got into financing. He made a lot of money, but he wasn't happy. He spoke more about this man. Turns out he was this man. And he had learned to make money and be happy being a wedding photographer. He was really great to listen to.

Walter Van Dusen who organized the workshop spoke. He showed off some of his latest work, and showed all of us how to get our work out to the customer so that they advertise for us.

Then Ben Chrisman presented. His work was phenomenal. I suggest everyone look at his photography. He basically travels all around the country photographing really cool, fun loving, mostly artsy couples. Also because he travels to the couples he spends usually the whole weekend photographing the rehearsal, and prepping, so by the wedding everyone is used to him snapping away.

Last up was Doug Boutwell. He is a photoshop genius. I learned so much amazing things, especially actions which he writes and then sells to other photographers. His wife Chenin and him run a wedding photography business out in California, and I constantly look at their blog. Their stuff rocks!

The workshop was a great experience and I can't wait to go to another one. I also can't wait to work on my craft and become a better photographer, artist, and professional.

Wedding Album Complete!

Last fall Dane Sponberg, a friend from SCAD, photographed his friends wedding. Dane remembered my handmade books from class and asked me if I was up to the challenge of creating a wedding album that he would then give as a gift. I was very excited about this project. That is until I began the process of constructing a book that is supposed to last a life time, and hold the memories of an amazing day. Let's just say the pressure was on.
I came across an assortment of problems, and dilemmas. My bookbinding glue didn't work, and I had to make more glue...yep I make my own glue! I also changed the design of the cover a few times. I wanted to create something that would last a long time, and fabric seemed to be the best option. I decided I wanted to make pin-tucks just like the brides dress. Her dress was just so unique and looked like it really suited her so I wanted the cover to do the same. So I then had to figure out how to make the pin-tucks look like hers, without a sewing machine. Then the fabric didn't adhere to the davy board with my new glue. So, I went to the craft store in search of any glue that might do the trick. I realized that glue was not going to work. I eventually came up with a solution.
I faced many more problems, but despite, all this I am now finished, and oh-so happy about it! The next time I create one of these complicated creations I am going to charge at least over $500.00. Luckily, for Dane I will not be charging him nearly as much. Here you can compare how I recreated the dresse's embellishment on the cover.

I hope the couple look this happy when they receive the album!

Whooo...I feel very relieved! At one point I thought I was not going to be able to complete this project. Now I have to wait and see if Dane, and the newlyweds approve.

Cupcake Shoot

Hudson | Wedding

This past Saturday I was at a wedding that took place at the Charter Oaks Country Club in Hudson, MA. The facility is really nice, but couples are limited to certain areas due to a members only policy for most of the grounds. Joseph still managed to get some cool shots despite the limited access, and blustery weather. The rain held off until we finished shooting. The second we were under shelter, buckets came down. We were pretty lucky. The DJ was not so lucky. On his way to the event his car broke down. He encountered a few other hassles, yet despite all this he did an awesome job. He is the first DJ, I have seen at a wedding that actually spins. Like a live band, spinning brings more energy to an event. His mixing, and matching of music was great, and just made you want to move. When I finally asked his name he said "Spindler". How convenient? All in all it was a pretty entertaining wedding.

Lake Pearl | Wedding

I shot a great wedding this weekend. It started off with the bridal party getting ready at the Residence Inn by Marriott, in Foxborough. The bride was especially calm and was cracking jokes with the stylists, and myself as I shot her getting her hair done. We then traveled to Lake Pearl Luciano's, a function hall overlooking the lake in Wrentham. The ceremony was held outside at the gazebo. It was a brisk day, but the sun was out and helped keep the guests warm. During the reception the toasts were funny and sweet. The food was descent. And although the dancing was slow to get started once the people were out on the dance floor they had a lot of fun. I think the best part though was when my boss told the DJ to play Thriller. We had shot at the groom's cousin's wedding in the spring, and Joseph knew from experience that she would do the entire dance. Needless to say she put on a show and the bride thought it was fantastic. At 5pm the reception was over, and I actually spent a Saturday night at home for once. Wahoo!

Boston College | Wedding

Last Friday, I had a great time photographing another wedding. The couple had both graduated from Boston College so they were married at Trinity Church on the BC campus. We then took pictures at the BC main campus. This was my first time at BC. It is beautiful, and I really like the location. The only thing I don't like is the traffic getting there from downtown. After pictures were over we followed the cab back into the city to the Hyatt in Cambridge. The reception took place on the top floor where you could see a great view of the city including Fenway which was completely lit. The groom and the bride looked like they had a terrific time, and spent a lot of time on the dance floor.

Marblehead | Wedding

On Saturday we started shooting in Marblehead at a wonderful salon called LA Belle Femme. Afterwards we drove to the bride's house and captured the bridesmaids, and the bride getting ready. Then we were off to The Star of the Sea, which was a beautiful church. Following this we photographed the wedding party nearby on the beach. There were some really cool rock formation, which made for awesome photos. It was also overcast for a while which was good for group shots. No one was forced to look into the sun like they normally do. As soon as the group shots were done though the sun came out and cheered everyones' spirits. We then traveled to reception site, The Tupper Hall at Endicott College, in Beverly. The hall was awesome, with lots of different rooms, including a dining room, dance hall, bar, library, and even a room you could play pool in. This was nice because it offers the guests activities other than dancing. However the DJ was great at getting people moving, and the reception was fun and lively!

Last of the 2007 September Weddings

This past weekend I had two weddings. Saturday's took place in multiple locations. We started out in Waltham at the hotel where they got ready. The maid of honor was a fashion student, and constructed all the bridesmaids gowns, as well as the brides. The brides had a 1920's vibe, and really suited her. We then went to Lexington where there was a Greek Orthodox service. I am usually not a fan of Greek wedding ceremonies simply because they are terribly long, and usually everything is done in Greek. This service however included English and Greek which was nice because I was able to follow what was going on but it still was traditional. Our last stop was at a the Sandy Burr Country Club, in Wayland. The staff was so personable and helpful. It was great!

Sunday's wedding took place in Marblehead. They had the ceremony in a historic hall which had beautiful architecture and stain glass windows. The service was super emotional, and the JP told some great stories about the couple. My favorite part was when she talked about the groom, and how he really wanted to propose but didn't feel he could afford to do so. While sitting on a beach in California he was thought about his wife-to-be and pondered what to do. His hands which were in the sand felt something. It was a ring with diamonds and emeralds. Since it was unmarked he didn't know how to return it to its owner. So he proposed to his bride, and the ring fit perfectly on her finger. The reception took place at The Corinthian Yacht Club which is defiantly the nicest yacht club I have ever seen. It has picturesque views, and wonderful wrapping porches to view the entire harbor. The music and food were great and everyone had a fabulous time!

North End | Wedding

Last Saturday I shot a Boston wedding. The Brides got ready in her parents' house in Revere. She designed her mother's gown as well as her own. The man fixing her hair in the image below built the two dresses. They were amazing. The Bride also sewed the flower girls dress. The couple was married in the North End, and then they took a trolley to the Hyatt near Logan. During there cocktail hour they released butterflies...which I sadly missed because I was setting up lights in the reception hall. All the decorations were nice, and the guests seemed to have a great time.

Tim and I spent last weekend in NY visiting his family.It was a nice trip, and I had a great time photographing Tim with his brother as they played basketball in the driveway.

Early Morning Wedding

I found out yesterday that I had to wake up today at 6am to get to a wedding in Salem, MA. I wasn't so thrilled. But once I woke up and had some food in me it was really fun. The bride and groom were incredibly nice, and were cracking jokes most of the time. The reception was at the Hawthorn Hotel, which I have shot at before. I love it there. It is so elegant, and the lighting is really easy due to the high flat ceilings. They had an excellent band named Eye 2 Eye who got everyone involved in dancing, and singing. All together, I had a good time, and was so excited to have a Saturday evening off for once. Guess it was worth getting up early.

MIAMI

In mid August I had the opportunity to visit Valerie my good friend, and old roomie from SCAD. Valerie has been living in Japan teaching English but was back for vacation to visit her Grandma in Miami. I haven't been to the beach that much this summer so it was really great to relax, and hang out with Valerie under the sun!

Andrew and Yuki's Wedding

I felt so lucky to be invited, and able to go to Andrew and Yuki’s wedding. All summer I have been at tons of weddings, but I never know the people I am photographing in advance. So this was so much fun taking a few shots especially since I just got a new lens. It was also a nice experience because I got to spend time with Tim and his family. It was such a nice occasion and I am very happy for Yuki and Andrew.
